We have had a fun, busy couple of weeks and we are getting closer and closer to becoming 2nd graders and moving into our new school. These 1st graders have become such wonderful readers and writers and they are simply AMAZING! We have had several exciting events lately and I can't wait to share! During Engineering week had several visitors and we had so many amazing activities. Our first visitor was an engineer from Lockheed and she taught the scholars how to make paper airplanes. They had so much fun. The next visitors were designers of stained glass. They went through the whole design process and then the scholars got to go back to class and plan and design their own stained glass design. The scholars presented the plan to them. The scholars Skyped with the designers and they improved the design and they are actually making their design out of stained glass! We are so excited to get this amazing gift. The final guests were from the Ft. Worth museum and they introduced and presented magnets to the scholars. The scholars got to move through different magnet stations and learned so much! For homework, the scholars created some fantastic engineering designs and brought them in to share with their classmates. This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss and had fun wearing our silly hats and creating some hats with construction paper. Mrs. Blizzard came and read some fun Dr. Seuss books with us too. We LOVE read alouds! We are looking forward to another amazing week and then we celebrate with Spring Break! Woohoo!! Have a wonderful week! It sure has been a busy year already! We have been doing inventor rotations with the other 1st grade classes and we are learning about many different inventors. In Science, we have been learning about forms of energy. This week we will be learning about sound energy and an awesome design challenge will follow. We love design challenges! we are learning about number sense to 99 in math. We have had many fun activities and this week will be a fun math week as well. We are getting so good at skip counting! We have been learning about fiction and non fiction and we have read some pretty amazing books comparing the two types of literature. In writing, we are learning all about opinion writing. After reading, Beatrice's Goat, we decided that we wanted to begin a charity project to raise money to buy a goat for needy family in another country. We learned that we would need to raise $120 to get a goat. I am happy to say that by Friday, we had earned enough for 2 goats! We were so excited and can't wait to send our money to Heifer International. In writing, we are learning about how to write a personal letter and reading we are learning all about character traits. Hello Parents! I hope the beginning of your Thanksgiving holiday has started off amazing! We sure had a fun, busy week to bring on the break! Along with our academics, we loved having Family Engineering Night and Grandfriends Day. We had 24 grandfriends visit our classroom! We loved hearing all about their special recipes and we loved having them join in our classroom fun! We taught our grandfriends how to use Ozobots, create mazes for our Hexbugs and design cranberry towers. They were so much fun! Family Engineering Night was a huge success. 1st grade was very proud to show and teach our parents all about the electronics we use everyday at school. Thank you to all who attended and those that were unable, you were definitely missed. The weeks ahead will be busy ones as we prepare for Christmas break. We will be learning about financial literacy, interdependency, character traits, changes in matter and how to write expository paragraphs. We will be busy! Be sure to keep an eye out for the information about our charity project. We are so excited to get started and provide a goat to a needy family in another country! Have a wonderful week and get lots of rest and enjoy your family time! We have so much to be thankful for! Good Morning! I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend. After a busy week, it was a nice, restful one for me. We had a great week last week filled with so many different things. In Math, we finished up our problem solving unit and will now head into financial literacy and data analysis. Learning about money and how we use it is always a fun unit. In Science, we are learning about interdependency and that will lead into the plant unit that begins on Friday. We have been exploring the different types of robotics at Cannon and we have learned so much. We have had the best time coding and learning from Mrs. Vorachard. We also carved a pumpkin. When we were carving the pumpkin we discussed properties of the pumpkin and adjectives to describe it. This week, we will be learning how to create maps and use them effectively. On Family Engineering Night, First grade will be using the different robotics and coding them through the maps we created. Be sure you plan to attend on, Thursday November 16 from 5:30-7:00. Please remember that Grandfriends day is Friday November 17 from 7:30-10:00. If your child has a grandparent that will be attending please use this link to sign them up. The invitation is in the photos below. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScJf-af8lBcOA6qPyRt-FfBdIKG-I3AgB7-PxCa77CIR_0PwQ/viewform It will be a lot of fun! I loved seeing all of the great storybook characters on Friday! Thank you for participating! Last week we continued working on addition and subtraction problem solving. They are getting so good at addition and subtraction! We are still working hard on those missing addend problems and word problems. This will be our last week on problem solving and next week we will begin the Money unit. In Science, we worked on animal research to find different animal characteristics and we continue working on narrative and expository writing . I am still so amazed when I see their writing! We learned about prepositions and adjectives in Humanities and created an adjective monster and then wrote a paragraph about our monster. We were so excited to learn how to code and fly a drone last week! We will definitely be experimenting more with the drone. This week we will be introduced to the different robotics we have here at Cannon. Starting Wednesday, we will have a different robotic device in our class each day. How fun is that? We were so excited to welcome our new chicks, Salt and Pepper! We were lucky enough to see Salt hatch out of her shell. That was the best thing to see! We are already in love with them! We are looking forward to a great week this week! Please remember that we have a half day Thursday, school is released at 11:45. Thanks for being awesome parents and have a wonderful week! We learned all about animal characteristics and why different animals have the fur, noses, ears, feet, etc.. that they do. We also learned about different landforms and bodies of water. We were introduced to research and how to find facts about animals and landforms. We wrote down important facts then turned those facts into a digital book! How fun is that? We are also learning about problem solving in math and had fun creating math problems using Draw and Tell. We are really good at addition! Sharing our writing has become one of our favorite times of the day! Our writing is becoming quite good and we are very proud of all of the accomplishments and excited to share! We were once not so in love with writing and now we look forward to it daily! I love that! The Grapevine Fire Department was here also this week.
